When Space Feels Too Tight—Inside and Out
In Tokyo, a one-person apartment is usually somewhere between 12 to 25 square meters—just enough space to stretch, sneeze, and maybe do one jumping jack if you don’t mind knocking over a chair. We like to joke that our homes are up in the clouds, and their prices? Even higher.
Sometimes, I dream of taking a hammer and punching out a window with the size of a moon—just to let the spring air rush in like an excited puppy.
Not a gentle breeze, no.
The wind run in like it’s late for a party, smack me right in the face, whoosh through the room, and send my pajamas flapping like a superhero’s cape.
Let the breeze bring everything in with it!
Rain? Why not.
Leaves? Come on in.
The neighbor’s floral dress? If it floats in, I’ll hang it up like artwork.
Just… no typhoons, please.
And no strong gusts blowing Mr. Chubby-From-Next-Door through my balcony. I’m not ready for a surprise roommate.
How about you?
If you could change one thing about your room, what would you do? Add a skylight for stargazing? A trapdoor for snacks?
